Electrolizing tap water with no salt still producess Hydrogen?

So I made electrolyser, tryed regular tap water and Ive seen bubbles form on negative stainless steel plate. Ive also heard that pure water cant be electrolysed, does that mean the tap water is mixed with something or...?

  1. All tap water and drinking water has minerals in it.  If you drank pure water, it would taste very strange to you.  The salts and other minerals, at varying levels, are what make it taste like good crisp water, or make it hard water if there are high levels.


  2. Hydrogen is what formular?H2O that means an Hydrogen ion must be inside every water.Tap water is mixed with chlorine to prevent toothdecay an bacteria,but this does not affect the hydrogen from forming when electricity is passed through it

  3. Tap water contains dissolved minerals and is also generally Chlorinated and/or Fluorinated.

    These dissolved substances produce Ionisation of the water which will then conduct electricity.

    Pure, distilled or de-mineralised water will not conduct electricity as none of the above are present.
