What can cause "electromagnetic energy" to degrade as it travels through the air?

if u think it excites another question how water waves (ripples are formed)   like if u throw a stone force fully more waves are formed but they die off showing medium resistances  same is the case for em waves(air is a medium and it provides resistance also ). imagine if there was no resistance for travelling of em waves ???!!!!!!!

I'm a little rusty, but it may be resistance in the air. Other electromagnetic sources may disrupt the particular source you are talking about.
