A 750-loop coil of wire with a radius of 0.045m carries a constant current of 0.33A. The coil is placed in a uniform, 2.5-T magnetic field that is directed at an angle of 58 degrees away from the normal direction of the plane of the coil. The coil is free to rotate about an axis that passes through its center and is perpendicular to the normal direction of the coil. What is the magnitude of the torque exerted on the coil by the magnetic field?

  1. See the ref. for explanation and derivation of equations.

    Coil area = 0.006361725 m^2

    Theta = 58 deg, α = 90 deg - theta

    Free-space permeability µ0 = 1.2567E-06 N/A^2

    Torque =  Ã‚µ0*N*I*area*B*cosα = 4.1949E-06 N-m
