  1. A electron microscope fires electrons at a sample that has a fine coating of gold on it. (yep the sample must be dead). This happens in a vacuum, so that sample must be carefully dried before coating.  The fired electrons hit the coating and displace other electrons.  The displacements are measured to build up a picture.  It can magnify up to 200000 times!

  2. You see something because light bounces off it and goes into your eye. Light is only so small though. If you want to see something smaller than light you have to use something smaller than light. Like a beam of electrons.

    The beam of electrons hits the object, bounces off it and hits a computer "eye" then the computer translates the image into something you can understand.
