Electronic Arts justifies Dead Space 3 changes – Video Games Update
Gamers were generally disappointed when Electronic Arts (EA) unveiled brand new footage for the third installment in the survival horror series Dead Space at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). The game no longer felt like a survival horror title but
more like a Gears of War and Call of Duty hybrid.
Ever since the initial footage and the news that the entire single player campaign can be played in co-op, gamers have been furious with EA and blame the publisher for ruining yet another franchise while trying to reach for the action adventure audience.
The first two games were claustrophobic corridor survival horror shooters but the upcoming Dead Space looks more like it’s a sequel to Lost Planet or a Gears of War game.
“We were doing research coming out of Dead Space 1 and 2 and we’re really proud of those products. We received feedback to understand how we can take the game out to even more consumers,” stated EA’s head of Marketing, Laura Miele, while conveniently forgetting
the fact that the major changes that have been implemented in the game would put off regular fans of the franchise.
But apparently that seem to be an acceptable trade of for EA if it means that the upcoming title might manage to sell as much as a Gears of War game normally does. Chances are that it won’t since it hasn’t worked out for any other franchise which tried to
change its genre just to increase sales.
“We were hearing feedback that they love the thriller game, but it was pretty scary, and the obvious next step was that they wanted to play with someone. So we introduced co-op into the game. The horror of Dead Space is still all there,” said Miele while
completely missing the point of a survivor horror title and basically confirming that the game will be much more action oriented.
From what has been revealed so far, regenerating health is the least popular new feature with the gamers. The fact that gamers will miss some important parts of the story if they are NOT playing multiplayer co-op has also angered many gamers. EA thinks that
the game must sell 5 million units if the franchise is to continue but considering all the hate the game is currently getting, that seems unlikely.
