I need something like an alarm to go off if the continuity in a coil gets lost.

  1. More difficult is detecting the continuity when the coil is under power. Setting off the alarm is just a connection.

What kind of coil is it, and how is it being used?

If it's the flyback coil in a TV, with thousands of volts on it, you can't connect that to an IC!

    .

  2. Any NAND gate shall do this job. Obtain a 2 inputs NAND logic.

one input feeds HI,other input connects to one side of coil, other end of coil feeds a HI,as the coil open,NAND gate switches from LO into HI,use it to control a relay, relay control a large alarm bell.

Or you can use a comparator or an OP-AMP. or even a single transistor.
