Eleider Alvarez to defend title for the first time against experienced Shawn Hawk – Boxing News
Eleider Alvarez, the current WBO NABO light heavyweight champion, will defend his title for the very first time against heavily experienced Shawn Hawk, in a 12-round bout which will be held on Friday June 8, 2012.
The duo will headline the pay-per-view being dubbed as ‘Fast and Furious Boxing Series’ and will be organised and promoted by Yvon Michel of GYM Promotions. The ring for the showdown will be set up at Bell Centre situated in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and
will also witness Oscar Rivas take on Sylvera Louis in a non-title bout while constituting the co-main event.
The bout will also witness David Lemieux collide with Jaudiel Zepeda in a non-title eight-round bout. Alvarez, 28, is a surging young Colombian pugilist who has been in a total eight bouts.
Eleider boasts an undefeated win streak and has nailed five of his opponents by sheer knockout. Also known as ‘The Storm’, Alvarez has literally taken the whole light heavyweight division by storm and has not only generated a pretty impressive resume with
an apex title in his possession but has also caught attention of division’s ace pugilists.
Despite having a flawless resume, Alvarez is seriously over shadowed by his Friday night opponent. Shawn, 28, has been in a total 25 bouts and emerged victorious in 23. Hawk has nailed 17 of his opponents by knockout and is currently on a five-bout win streak
since his last and only career loss to Matt Godfrey.
A bird’s eye view of resume of both men shows that Shawn, also known as ‘The Sioux Warrior’, has a complete upper hand over Alvarez. Hawk has nailed pretty experienced pugilists in his last five bouts whereas Alvarez has just collided with two top-notch
pugilists Rayco Saunders and Emiliano Cayetano.
The only thing that might create a difference is Hawk’s experience since both men are equal as far as the physical facets are concerned. The duo has the same height and therefore the reach which will not aid them much in the bout.
Alvarez has to defend himself from Shawn’s powerful jabs as he is entering the ring as a knockout specialist. If Alvarez is able to do so and follows his game plan of connecting well targeted jabs with agility and by undergoing impressive footwork, he will
definitely defend the gold in his very first defence.
Alvarez currently resides at World Boxing Organisation’s 49th rank as compared to Shawn’s 30th. The bout will be a tough one as it will help Alvarez in boosting himself up in the divisional rankings.
