Elementary student portfolios?

Does anyone have any suggestions for creating student portfolios for parent teacher confrences? I`ve previously used binders but they take up way to much precious storage space in the classroom. Does anyone have any ideas for easy portfolios that can store student work from a variety of subjets?

  1. I have a file cabinet with file folders. I also have a portable file container if I have to take them home to work on. These are perfect for parent/teacher conferences because I just take out the ones I need.

  2. three prong pocket folders

  3. How many students do you have?  You could consider having students put their work into hanging file folders that are stored in milk crates. (They hang in them and can be stacked up.)  You could consider having separate manilla folders for different subjects in their hanging folders.  Have their names on tabs on the hanging folders and depending on the kids' ages, let them lable the individual subject folders, maybe even let them decorate them.

  4. We create our own folders that allow us to add things as the year goes on.  We use 12x18" paper (we have this readily available at my school, which makes it easy) and hold it vertically, then we fold the bottom up 6" and glue the sides.  That is the pocket (12x12" in size).  It's a great size that fits everything-- including craft items.  I teach 3rd grade and have the students measure, fold, glue, and decorate the pockets themselves.  Then we 3-hole punch the sides and use binder rings to hold the folders together.  The kids add the folders to the rings themselves.  Once the kids do one folder, they are experts and work very independently!    They are great because you can make and add folders as you see fit (by marking period, subject etc).  They are flat and store easily in a student's desk or altogether in a milk crate.  I usually laminate the front and back folder for durability.  I hope this helps!!  Good luck!

  5. use folders.

  6. We use binders, and have a special bookcase to hold them.  I have also used a milk crate or box to hold binders.  This year we hope to go on line, to create more work that can be stored and shared digitally. Will this work for you?
