Why is their 4 elements in western belief systems but 5 in Asian belief systems is that all their is?

  1. Some variations of the 'Platonic' elements propose a fifth also - the 'quint-essence'.  

    It is difficult to tell at what point belief in these 'elements' became allegorical rather than factual.  Certainly in Europe it was known that there was more than the classical four (or five) by the Middle Ages.

  6. I firmly believe that wood and metal are NOT elements. They are according to many asian beliefs though. You could also say "spirit" is a "fifth element" but I believe that's a load of hockey too.
