I want to get a head start on high school chemistry for next year, so I want to know which elements are the most important to memorize? Not the complicated one, just the ones you have to know in high school chemistry that the teacher will probably make you memorize later.

  1. the first elements with a one-letter symbol... like oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, etc! i think those are the commonly used elements..

  2. If you get an awesome teacher like I had for Chemistry I and II, you won't need to memorize any of them. She let us use a periodic table on our tests. As you go along, you will start to memorize them without knowing it. I even know some of them masses by heart.

  3. I don't ask my students to memorize any elements, but by the end of a month of so the students will know the most important 20 or 30 and by the end of the semester maybe 50 elements.  So pay attention, and do the assignments.  The more you use the information, the more you will retain.

  4. CHNOPS - Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Phosphorus, Sulfur

    These are very important.

There are other important ones you don't have to memorize (just know about). It actually depends on your teacher, if he/ she wants you to memorize more, it's up to him/ her. But these are the very important ones.
