Elena Bovina upsets Chichi Scholl to reach the main draw – Bell Challenge 2011
Russian Elena Bovina earned a surprise victory over the qualifying third seed, America’s Chichi Scholl at the Bell Challenge 2011, a WTA International event held on the indoor hard courts in Quebec, Canada. She registered a 6-3,
7-5 victory over the 19-year-old American to book a main draw spot on Tuesday.
Standing at 360th spot in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, Bovina displayed tremendous skills at this two hours long match to stun the American teenager, ranked 186 places above her, on their first meeting.
The Moscow resident, Bovina made a nervy start in the first set after losing her serve in the opening game. However, she quickly counterattacked in the fourth game and squared the scores at 2-2. The Russian then kept her composure
to hold her remaining serves and broke the youngster’s serve again in the eighth game to clinch the opener with a 6-3 win.
The Russian smacked five aces and manifested a higher first serve share of 70 percent as compared to Scholl’s 62 percent. She also earned a convincing 58 percent win on it and saved seven out of eight breakpoints faced through
her amazing defensive abilities.
28-year-old Russian kept momentum flowing into the final set and broke the American’s serve in the very first game. Despite losing her edge in the sixth game when she lost her serve, Bovina broke American’s serve again in the eleventh
game which eventually led her to glory. She sealed the deal by winning seven games to five and confidently secured a main draw spot.
Bovina spilled more errors and clobbered a poor first serve share but registered a fabulous 79 percent win on it. She fended off two out of three breakpoints faced and capitalised on two out of five breakpoint opportunities to
her advantage to help win easily.
Up next for the Russian is the fifth seeded Swede Sofia Arvidsson in the first round of this WTA event.
Julie Coin will be joining Bovina in the main draw. She upset qualifying fifth seed, Slovene Petra Rampre in seventy-one minutes in straight sets to reach this spot.
