Elena Sheridan and Craig Benson conquer gold in swimming events: Day two – 2011 Commonwealth Games
Elena Sheridan of England and Craig Benson of Scotland conquered gold medals in the Women’s 200m butterfly and Men’s 200m breast-stroke respectively, on day two of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games on September 10, in Isle of Man.
The 16-year-old Sheridan overpowered the efforts of her fellow swimmers in the distant butterfly swim and captured the gold medal of the event by submitting a fastest time of 2 minutes and 09.85 seconds. The English champion managed a lead of 2.03 seconds
over her following swimmer, Vanessa Puhlmann of Australia, who concluded her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 11.88 seconds for silver medal. Rachael Kelly of England was the third fastest swimmer of the four-lap butterfly discipline, as she remained 2.24 seconds
behind the silver medallist and completed her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 14.12 seconds.
Kelly was trailed by Charlotte Bryan of Wales, who remained just 0.86 seconds slower than the bronze medallist and posted a fourth fastest time 2 minutes and 14.98 seconds. The 17-year-old Bryan was followed by Kristina Neves of Guernsey, who remained 2.25
seconds behind the fourth fastest finisher and ended her swim in 2 minutes and 17.23 seconds. Neves was trailed by Charlotte Atkinson of Isle of Man, who concluded her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 20.97 seconds.
In the meantime, 17-year-old Benson occupied the title of the distant breast-stroke swim, by reporting a time of 2 minutes and 11.15 seconds. With his commendable effort, he remained 3.12 seconds ahead of his closest competitor and Australian swimmer, Tommy
Sucipto, who secured the podium for silver medal with a timing of 2 minutes and 14.27 seconds. The third spot of the race was secured by Kurt Benjamin of South Africa, as he remained 6.61 seconds slower than the second finisher and reached the podium for bronze
medal by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 20.88 seconds.
The fourth spot of the race was secured by Giovanni Guarino of Jersey, who was ranked as the fourth position holder for posting a time of 2 minutes and 21.08 seconds. Guarino was in a comfortable lead of 2.50 seconds over Joshua Lewis of Guernsey, as he
touched the wall in 2 minutes and 23.58 seconds. Ronaldo R Rodrigues of Guyana acquired sixth best spot of the race by posting a time of 2 minutes and 38.68 seconds.
Furthermore, the crowd acknowledged the creditable efforts of all position holders, while the medals were given to each position holder after the completion of the session.
