Elena Sheridan wins Women’s 200m butterfly meet: Day One – European Long Course Junior Championships
Day one of the 2011 European Long Course Championships ended with the scintillating performance of Great Britain’s swimmer, Elena Sheridan, at Belgrade, Serbia, on Thursday, July 7. She nabbed the Women’s 200m butterfly crown in a winning time of 2 minutes
and 10.40 seconds.
While speaking about her performance in the 200m butterfly final, Sheridan said, “She kept coming back at me but I pushed through and I won! That was a really hard race but I’m so happy especially with another personal best. That was brilliant.”
Hungarian swimmer, Liliana Szilagyi wound up second in a time of 2 minutes and 10.95 seconds, whereas, Georgia Barton of Preston snared the bronze medal after touching the finishing wall in 2 minutes and 12.27 seconds.
After the race, Barton claimed, “That was brilliant! I just kept going and we’ve done it. I can’t wait to get on the podium and sing the national anthem together.”
In another event, Christian Diener of Germany won the Men’s 100m back-stroke meet with a sterling time of 55.11 seconds, whereas, Charlotte Bonnet of France topped the Women’s 100m freestyle race with a captivating time of 55.56 seconds.
Additionally, Matti Mattsson of Finland snared the Men’s 200m breast-stroke meet with a victorious time of 2 minutes and 13.28 seconds. Eyglo Osk Gustafsdottir of Iceland picked up the top seed in the Women’s 200m back-stroke race in a time of 2 minutes
and 15.48 seconds, while Julia Larina of Russia earned second place honours in 2 minutes and15.69 seconds.
Italian swimmers, Maurizio Mottola, Francesco Bellacci, Giacomo Ferri and Damiano Corapi took home the Men's 400m free relay crown with a winning time of 3 minutes and 23.13 seconds.
Earlier, Donata Klijanska of Poland grabbed the Women’s 800m freestyle title in a time of 8 minutes and 40.48 seconds, whereas, Irish swimmer, Sycerika McMahon snagged the Women’s 50m breast-stroke event in 32.00 seconds.
The European Long Course Junior Championships is an excellent opportunity for junior level swimmers to prepare themselves well for their futuristic events.
