Elena Vesnina gets rid of Ekaterina Ivanova in the 2nd round – Kremlin Cup 2011
Elena Vesnina ousted Ekaterina Ivanova in the second round of the Kremlin Cup 2011. The two took up the gauntlet on indoor hard courts of the Olympic Stadium in Moscow, Russia. After one hour and twenty six minutes the higher ranked
Russian Vesnina got rid of lower ranked Ivanova in straight sets of 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday the 20th October 2011.
The two compatriots were contesting against each other for the first time and opening the first round of the match was Ivanova but she got off to a bad start as she was unable to hold her service game. On the contrary, Vesnina
not only capitalized on an early break but also held her serve to reel off with a mini lead of 2-0. In the following two games the players held serve and the scoreboard shifted at 3-1.
During the fifth and the sixth games the players once more managed to bag a service game each and the score further shifted to 4-2. In the seventh and the eighth game the two broke each other back-to-back and now Vesnina was only
a game away from clogging the first set. As Ivanova served, she double faulted on her second serve and gifted the opening set to Vesnina.
The second round of the match was initiated by Vesnina and this time she was unable to win her first service game. Mean while, Ivanova not only capitalized on a break point but also held her serves and took a mini lead of 2-0.
By the end of the fourth game the mini lead was brought to an end as Vesnina held her serve and then capitalized on a break point to rotate the score board at 2-2.
In the following two games the players successfully held their serves and then broke each other back-to-back in the seventh and the eighth game. By the end of the eighth game the score had once more tied at four games each. Although,
the players matched a blow for a blow in the ninth game Vesnina skilfully held her serve and in the tenth As Ivanova double faulted on her serve, Vesnina clogged the set and the match.
The 25-year-old Russian managed to reserve a spot in the third round of the Kremlin Cup where she will be facing third seeded French Marion Bartoli, who had gotten rid of Ksenia Pervak in the previous round.
