Elena Vesnina outfoxes Casey Dellacqua to book a spot in round two – BNP Paribas Open 2012
World number 54, Elena Vesnina, dumps the Aussie qualifier, Casey Dellacqua, in the first round clash of the BNP Paribas Open. She eased past her opponent in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 taking just an hour and 24 minutes to perform
the task.
It was first ever face-off at the courts and the qualifier did well to test her opponent but the Russian doubles specialist showed her sublime technique in the singles contest as well to sneak her way into the second round.
Vesnina was in desperate need for this win having lost five matches on the trot. A terrible start from the Aussie tennis star helped her cause. Dellacqua failed to find accuracy with her first serves and committed several unforced
errors that led to her downfall in the opening game of the match. She gifted away the breakpoint to her opponent that was coupled with a serve hold from the Russian.
A lead of 2-0 proved healthy to start with as the Aussie starlet once again faulted on her serve and lost second breakpoint to her opponent in the fifth game. The scores were 4-1 in favour of the Russian. Three successive breakthroughs
in the following games pushed the scores to 5-3 with Dellacqua serving to stay in the set.
Although, the Aussie qualifier did well to stamp her authority by not giving away single point on her serve, she failed to pressurize her opponent in the following game that ended the set in favour of the Russian.
Trailing one set down and looking worn out, Dellacqua started the second set with a serve hold but couldn’t repeat the performance in the second serve game; donated the breakpoint to her opponent who further enhanced the lead to
3-1 courtesy to a comprehensive serve hold.
A series of break points from both ends witnessed the scores ticking over to 6-5 in favour of the Russian, who just had to hold her serve in the following game to register a much need triumph in Indian Wells. All in all, seven
breakpoints were won by both players with Vesnina leading the ratio 4:3.
Another disappointing end to such a classic start for the Aussie sees her dream of breaking into the Top-100 list shattered away. On the other hand, Vesnina will take on the American tennis icon, Christina McHale, in the second
round of the tournament. It will definitely be a much tougher matchup for the Russian.
