Elena Vesnina plonks Tamira Paszek in round two – China Open 2012
World number 78, Elena Vesnina, continues to surprise everyone with a classic run at the China Open. On Monday, she trounced the 27th ranked Austrian, Tamira Paszek, in the second round. She registered straight sets
score line of 7-6(5), 6-2; advanced into the third round with a conquest that took just a fraction over a couple of hours.
Taking a flashback at the past meetings between the two tennis athletes, the odds were equal and a possible upset was expected considering the last year triumph of the 26-year-old Russian who hammered away the 27th ranked
Austrian in the Italian Open opener. However, the head-to-head scores were tied at 1-1 considering the conquest of Paszek over Vesnina that was registered way back in 2005 during Generali Ladies Linz.
The opening set proved eventful right from the word go. The 21-year-old Austrian was put under pressure in the opening game of the match but she survived the hammering courtesy some emphatic defensive play and managed to squeeze
a serve hold. The Russian faced no trouble in equalizing the scores.
Both players traded breakpoints in the fourth and following game and a serve hold from the Austrian youngster levelled the scores at 3-3. It was a terrific contest as both the contestants were equally talented and met each other
blow-by-blow. A double exchange of breakthroughs excited the crowd and shifted the momentum from one side to another after the passage of each game but didn’t hurt any of the two parties in the end.
A serve hold at both ends enforced the tie-breaker round. Vesnina took an early mini-break that helped her to clinch the opening set but there was absolutely nothing at all to spare between the two contenders.
Trailing a set down, Paszek lost the opening serve game but recovered well to equalize the scores with a break back. However, the Russian came out with a game plan and continued to work on that back-hand of the Austrian that took
a toll on Paszek. A double breakthrough with a couple of serve holds ended the encounter in favour of the qualifier who is now into the third round of the contest where she plays the winner of the match between Ana Ivanovic and Varvara Lepchenko.
