Elena Viatcheslavovna Dementieva: A Look At Her Performance This Year

Born on the 15th of October 1981 in the city of Moscow, Elena Viatcheslavovna Dementieva is a professional tennis player from Russia. So far she has won a total of two medals at the Olympic Games in singles, including a gold medal back in Beijing 2008.
The Russian even made her way to the final of the French Open tennis tournament back in 2004, as well as the United States Open competition during the same year. She achieved her career highest ranking of number three, back in 2009 April. The right handed player is currently ranked number six in the world.
As far as her 2010 performances are concerned, the twenty eight year old Russian started the season with a participation in the Hopman Cup 2010 with Igor Andreev as her partner. She was taken down in the Round Robin stage by Sabine Lisicki prior to hammering down Laura Robson as well as Yaroslava Shvedova.
Elena's first championship this year was the Medibank International where she successfully made her way to the final of the championship and went against the current number one tennis ace, Serena Williams. The Russian knocked down Serena in a total of two sets and won the Medibank International title 2010. The final match score was 6–3 6–2. Dementieva then played at the Barclays Dubai Tennis tournament as a fifth seeded player. However, she couldn’t pass the second round of the tournament as the Russian sadly had to withdraw from her match against Daniela Hantuchova, because of her shoulder injury.
At the Malaysian Open, the 1.80 meter tall Elena, reached the final round where she was hammered down by Alisa Kleybanova in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6–3, 6–2. Next, she took part in the BNP Paribas Open competition, where Dementieva couldn’t pass the quarterfinal stage as she was defeated by Agnieszka Radwanska in a total of two sets.
In the following weeks, she got an early second round exit at the Sony Ericsson Open tournament, when she went down at the hands of Justine Henin in a two setter clash.
The sixth ranked Russian represented hes side in the semi final stage of the Fed Cup 2010 when they went up against the United States of America. She hammered down Melanie Oudin as well as Bethanie Mattek-Sands in her two singles clashes. In the final doubles match though, Elena along with Alla Kudryavtseva were thrashed by Liezel Huber and Mattek-Sands with a final match score of 6–3, 6–1.
Next Elena participated as a sixth seeded player at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia competition. But she was kicked out in third round of the championship by Ana Ivanovic.
At the clay court French Open tournament, the now fifth seeded Elena, reached the semi final round after defeating Petra Martic, Anabel Medina Garrigues, Aleksandra Wozniak, Chanelle Scheepers as well as Nadia Petrova. She faced the seventh seeded Francesca Schiavone in the semi final match, but had to withdraw because of a muscle injury.
The Russian didn’t participate in the following Eastbourne or the grass court Grand Slam tournaments because of that injury.
Her first competition after recovering was the Bank of the West Classic, where the second seeded Elena reached the quarter final stage before being torn apart by Maria Sharapova in a total of three sets.
As far as the ongoing Cincinnati Women’s Open tennis competition is concerned, the third seeded Elena Viatcheslavovna Dementieva lost her second round match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in a total of two sets. As a result of this loss, Elena is out of the tournament.
However, the Russian is still pretty hopeful for the upcoming US Open 2010 and is likely to perform better at the Flushing Meadows in the city of New York.
