Eleni Daniilidou, Jamie Hampton enter the semi-finals – Van Open 2011 CH
World No.103 Eleni Daniilidou of Greece led a seeded charge into the semi-final of the Vancouver Open on Friday, winning the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to finish off
Julia Cohen as the quarterfinal round took the courts.
Seeded fourth at the tournament, Daniilidou continued to fly fast under the radar Van Open on at Hollyburn Country Club and managed to clinch her straight sets win, taking
not more than one hour and thirty minutes of play.
A close look into the statistics gives further reasoning to her emphatic straight sets win. Coming into this event, Daniilidou had played 39 matches for the year and had
lost only fifteen of them, clear evidence that the Greek is progressing towards the betterment of her career quite nicely.
Cohen’s level of play can always fluctuate at the best of times but today she did not offer much today and was outplayed by the on fire Daniilidou in straight sets.
Although Daniilidou faced a threat on her serve early and double-faulted to have the American women an early break and a 2-0 lead, the Greek woman pushed back, quickly breaking
Cohen after battling with her own mistakes to grab the early advantage.
From there it was quite clear that Daniilidou was sprinting towards the finish line as she won six consecutive games to close out the first with set with a 6-2 score line.
In the second set, Cohen got ahead again 2-0 and then managing to hold her serve for a 3-0 lead when Daniilidou looked to have struggling with her second serve. Although
she had to meet a huge obstacle in Cohen, the 28-year-old Greek quickly regained her composure from 3-0 to 4-3, and it was not long until she had wrapped up the second set 6-4.
Daniilidou finished off her straight sets victory by scoring 54 percent on service, 58 percent on return and 56 percent of points during the whole match. In contrast, Cohen
hanged back with a difference of thirteen points, scoring 42 percent of service, 46 percent of return and a total of 48 of 109 points during the whole process.
The fourth seeded Greek now takes on Jamie Hampton of America in the semi-finals after Hampton beat Julia Glushko in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to set-up a clash with the Greek
woman for the first time in her career.
