Eleni Daniilidou upsets Pauline Parmentier in opening round – Tashkent Open 2011
Unseeded Greek Eleni Daniilidou upset third seeded Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier in their first round match at the 2011 Tashkent Open on Tuesday, 13th September. The Greek shrugged off a slow start to clinch a straight,
yet not so simple, 7-5, 6-1 sets victory in less than ninety minutes over her seeded opponent.
Winning the toss the Greek kicked off the serve. Though bleak in her offense, Daniilidou was unable to hold her serve as the higher ranked French broke to put herself on the scoreboard. A successful hold of serve later, Parmentier
was leading the score 2-0. Though off to a slow start, Daniilidou bounced back in the third game as she held her serve before breaking the French in the fourth to bring the score to even terms. Slowly progressing from there on; both players continued to win
on their respective serves as the scoreboard ticked on event terms. Standing at 6-5, Daniilidou was able to convert a breakpoint opportunity to her advantage to clinch the first set with a 7-5 win.
Taking almost an hour, Daniilidou hit an acceptable 68 percent on a 65 percent first serve with zero aces and two doubles faults to go one up in the set score.
Maintaining her form, Daniilidou assaulted the third seed in the second set from the start. Though Parmentier won her first service game, it was all she could do since she never made it onto the scoreboard again. Broken twice and
unable to break, Parmentier lagged in the set before succumbing to a breadstick defeat.
Wrapping up the set in a little over twenty five minutes, the Greek saved and converted two breakpoints each as she clinched a total of 31 of 50 points to seal her straight sets victory.
Daniilidou now moves on ahead to play Japanese Misaki Doi in the second round. Doi moved on ahead in the event on Monday after surviving a mid match lapse against her first round opponent, Luxembourger Mandy Minella. Doi toiled
for nearly two hours and eleven minutes before recording a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Minella.
