Has anyone ever been to Elephant Butte Lake in New Mexico? I heard that the water is very muddy, but it doesn't look that way from the photos. Do you recommend the lake for houseboating? Thanks!

  1. not muddy at all, i'm sure it has it's spots just like any other body of water, wonderful for our trip though. houseboating, how fun! sounds like a good idea

  2. The water here in Elephant Butte is fine. At the moment it is very cold, around 42 degrees. Houseboats are just as welcome as anyone else here, and there is plenty of room to explore or find your own cove or beach. There are three marinas where you can also find overnight slip rentals. Have fun!

http://elephantbuttelake.net/ has good info about the lake.

  3. The fish will have a muddy flavor.  Water is only summer warmed and then to first thermocline with very cold winter

waters at depth.  It would be hard to beach anywhere and

not find trash as Elephant Butte isn't remote enough to

escape disrespect.  I'd rather not hear houseboasts either.

Hope the day dawns when oars or paddles only ripple all of

    New Mexico.
