Eli Manning’s another late score helps New York Giants defeat Washington Redskins 27-23 – NFL Recap
Quarterback Eli Manning could not give New York Giants an assertive start over Washington Redskins on Sunday, October 21, at MetLife Stadium, but he was at his best when his team was three points behind with less than 90 seconds left on the clock.
The quarterback connected with wide receiver Victor Cruz for a 77-yard score, staging yet another late-comeback-victory, 27-23, for the defending champions.
Although Giants have been working hard to make strong starts to their games, they have not been able to gain solid advantage over their opponents, especially in first quarters.
However, Manning, who is brilliant under pressure, has developed a reputation of rescuing his team and stealing victories from jaws of defeats in final quarters.
The same happened in this game. After a slow start, Giants gained some momentum and were tied with Redskins at halftime.
They got the lead in the final quarter, but Redskins got a couple of scores and took the lead. However, Manning and Cruz connected late for a score to secure the victory for Giants.
According to the details present on Giants’ website, Cruz said after the game:
“With our offence and with Eli at the helm, we’re never really too worried. We know that no matter what situation we’re in, no matter how many points we need or a field goal, we have the confidence that we can do it. We can get ourselves in the right position
to kick a field goal. We can get ourselves in the right position for a touchdown. We just have a lot of confidence in each other and in Eli and I think it shows on the field.”
Manning finished the game completing 26 of his 40 attempted passes for 337 yards. He scored one touchdown and threw two interceptions.
On the other hand, Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) was amazing during the entire game and he almost led the team to a win over the defending champions, but for Manning’s late score.
RG3 finished the game completing 20 of his 28 attempted passes for 258 yards while scoring two touchdowns. RG3 also sent an interception.
Redskins started the game well and took an early lead by scoring a field goal in the first quarter.
Giants scored a touchdown early in the second quarter, but Redskins responded equally well by scoring a touchdown. Giants got two field goals in the quarter while Redskins managed only one field goal to enter halftime 13-13.
After the scoreless third quarter, Giants started the final quarter strong and took the lead by scoring a touchdown. However, Redskins replied by scoring a field goal, which was followed by a touchdown. Trailing by three points, Giants got the game-winning
touchdown when Manning and Cruz combined for a 77-yard score.
With the victory, Giants took their winning streak to three games. They are now going to take on Dallas Cowboys in Week 8 game, while Redskins will face Pittsburgh Steelers.
