  1. simpily in 2 hours

  2. Eli rate: 1 home in 4 hours or 1/4

    Tim rate: 1 home in 6 hours or 1/6

    Add the rates

    1/4 + 1/6 = 1/x

    LCD = 24x - multiply to clear the denominators

    6x + 4x = 24

    10x = 24

    x = 2.4 hours

  3. Using the method demonstrated in the movie 'Little Big League', these problems are solved by using the formula a*b divided by a+b

    a*b=4*6=24

    a+b=4+6=10

    a*b divided by a+b = 24/10

    24/10 hours, 2.4 hours.  Remembering that an hour has 60 minutes, .4 hours is 24 minutes (.4*60).

    2 hours 24 minutes.

    Edit:  Sheesh.  You'd think I'd at least get a thumbs-up from someone for quoting Little Big League for a Math problem. :)

  4. If Eli can paint a home in 4hrs, then in 1hr he can paint 1/4 of the home.

    If Tim can paint a home in 6hrs, then in 1hr he can paint 1/6 of the home.

    so if you add them up, 1/4 of the home + 1/6 of the home

    = 3/12+2/12

    = 5/12 of the home

    so in 1hr, both paint 5/12 of the home.

    Next, if they paint 5/12 of the home in 1hr, so

    5/12 = 1hr

    1/12 = 12 min

    12/12 = 144 min

             = 2hrs 24min

    So, it will take both of them 2hrs and 24min to paint together.
