Eligibility for jury duty (UK only)?

What makes you eligible for jury duty? Also, under what circumstances would you be considered ineligible?

I've heard that jurors are taken from the voting registers; is this true and does it mean if you don't register to vote, you won't be called?

  1. if you are  over 18 and healthy you may be called for jury sevice............ and yes it is from the  E.. roll

  2. I was called for jury service years ago 6 weeks before my baby was due, so i wrote and told them and they excused me from it.

  3. You have to be over 18 and under 70 to be called for jury duty.

You're automatically registered to vote, you have to fill in the electoral roll form by law, but, yes jurors are picked via that route.

You can be ineligible for jury duty if you have served on a jury panel in the last 2 years (or longer for more "serious" crimes), if you know any party involved in the trial (but you have to state that as soon as you know during the trial), if you are a member of a religious community (ie buddist residing at a priory).  There are others, but if you do get called for jury service, the information is sent in the pack with your notice.

  4. You are eligible for jury service if:

You will be at least 18 years old, and under 70 years old, on the day that you start your jury service; and

You are registered as a parliamentary or local government elector; and

You have lived in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for any period of at least 5 years since you were 13 years old.

Yes you are right you do have to be on the electoral role - if you don't register you cannot be called.
