Elijah Taylor may switch back to rugby union after end of contract - Rugby news
While talking to media reporters on Wednesday, November 2, New Zealand’s back rower, Elijah Taylor, expressed his intentions of reverting back to Rugby Union. He may switch codes after his current contract at Rugby League with Wigan Warriors expires.
The Kiwi player is exceptional in his on field skills because of which he is now playing for the Kiwis national team, just after seven months of making his debut in National Rugby League (NRL) games. The player joined the league family from the alternate
code because he liked the structure of the game, which was much faster. However, this feeling may have subsided as it is apparent from his intentions of going back to union.
Expressing his thoughts about his move to league, the 21-year-old said, “I saw a pathway with rugby league and the Warriors - the [under-]20s and into first grade. I just didn't see that pathway in Auckland rugby union. It was plainly set out. You go through
development, you make the under-20s, you train with first grade and then you make first grade. You're already there. [In rugby union] I just didn't see the structures that I did at the Warriors. I was in the Auckland under-16s union team and development squad
- that was back in 2006."
He added that he still watches alot of union games and he has also followed World Cup 2011 games.
The player further went on and added that he still loves following rugby union games, and playing for league at the moment does not write off the other option for him. He told the reporters that union is what he has grown up playing. Also, he may revert
back to the rival code after his term with Warriors expires, which still has two more years remaining on the contract.
He also added that if he joins the alternate code, he is likely to take up the second-five position on field. It is also reckoned that the player’s decision to switch to union has been influenced by Sony Bill William’s decision to play for union, which had
been a tough decision for him to make.
