Elimination round of Quiksilver Pro France fails to start as lay day is called
The Quiksilver Pro France action was unable to resume at the primary event site of La Graviere in Hossegor, France, on Monday, October 1, after the event organisers were forced to call a lay day due to unsuitable conditions.
According to the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) International Head Judge Rich Porta, there just was not enough juice on offer at the event site, thus leading to a decision to keep Round 2 on hold until a significant improve in tide was seen.
“Not enough out there this morning to warrant a Round 2 start so we have called a lay day,” Porta, said. “We anticipate a good swell to begin showing tomorrow and will be back in the morning to assess our options.”
Quiksilver Pro France, the seventh of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, has traditionally played a crucial role in the campaign for the coveted ASP World Title.
With the race for the top honours pretty tight, the outcome of the event is of huge significance.
So far, the first round of Quiksilver Pro France has been completed, with the competition taking two days to get done with the 12 heats.
The elite ASP surfers had delivered a series of exquisite performances in demanding three-to-five foot waves that were on offer during the course of the opening round.
Australia’s Mick Fanning, former two-time ASP World Champion and current No.1 on the ASP World Championship Tour rankings, was nothing short of impressive during his heat and successfully advanced straight into the third round.
Reigning 11-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater continued his excellent form from Lower Trestles, comfortably taking down Hawaii’s Dusty Payne and Portugal’s Tiago Pires to jump over Round 2 into the third round.
Australia’s Joel Parkinson and Hawaii’s John John Florence seemed a bit out of rhythm on the opening day of the competition. While the experienced Parkinson lost to an equally intimidating American surfer Dane Reynolds, the Hawaiian surfer succumbed to America’s
Patrick Gudauskas.
When the competition resumes, Parkinson will take on Brazil’s Wiggolly Dantas in the opening heat of Round 2, while the heat that follows will pit Florence against Payne in a one-on-one battle for survival.
