  1. She was born the heir apparent.

  2. Henry VIII, despite having 6 wives, only had 3 children that were living when he died in 1547. His son, who became Edward VI, was not strong. He suffered from congenital syphilis passed on from his father, got TB, and died in 1553 at age 15.

His older daughter Mary I (Bloody Mary), also had health problems from the congenital syphilis. Although she married, she never had children. She died in 1558 from influenza.

This left only Elizabeth I as the last surviving child of Henry VIII and the direct heir.

  3. Her brother Edward VI died when he was still young and had not had any children. Her sister Mary I then became Queen and even though she married she never had children. So when she died Elizabeth became Queen because Henry VIII stated that his three children would succed in this order Edward, Mary, and Elizabeth.

  4. Start googling Elizabeth 1 and you'll come up with lots of info and if you have time before your assignment is due a trip to the library would be worthwhile.

  5. It was actually quite amazing that Elizabeth came to the throne at all.

Her father, Henry VIII passed Acts of Succession depending on to whom he was married at the time, and Elizabeth found herself a b*****d - along with her sister, Mary - until Henry's son Edward was born.  Then Mary and Elizabeth were returned to the line of succession behind Edward.

Edward VI, King after Henry, died young and, probably urged by his adviser Northumberland, named Lady Jane Grey as his successor, who was daughter-in-law to Northumberland.  (This was unlawful as it was done by a minor, and it contradicted the Act of Succession.)  Poor, young Jane was Queen for only nine days until Mary took her rightful place as Queen of England.  She was later executed by Queen Mary.

Mary ruled for five years until she became ill and died, probably from cancer of the ovaries or uterus.  (Some say influenza, but she had thought she was pregnant at least twice with no baby forthcoming.)

Elizabeth was in much danger during this time under her sister.  She was highly intelligent, though, and managed to stay out of trouble apart from one very worrying time when she was sent to the Tower of London for a while.

When Mary died, Elizabeth was at Hatfield.  When she heard she was Queen, as natural successor, she exclaimed in Latin, "This is the Lord's doing and it is marvellous in our eyes".

So, she was Henry VIII's second daughter, though it was thought at the time that either Edward would marry and have heirs to whom the crown would pass; or that Mary, next in line, would marry and have heirs.  In each case it would have been almost impossible for Elizabeth to have become Queen.

    Hope that helps!
