Elizabeth Cann overpowers Kamila Augustyn in Women’s Singles first round at Finnish Open 2012
England’s spirited shuttler Elizabeth Cann proved her mettle in Women’s Singles first round when she overpowered Poland’s Kamila Augustyn at Finnish Open 2012 on Friday, March 30, in Finland.
Cann showed her impressive skills and remained successful in beating her Polish opponent in an entertaining three-set contest that lasted 51 minutes long.
The English lady could not find a perfect start and lost the opening set. However, she powered her way back into the match and grabbed the following both games to oust her opponent.
On the other hand, Augustyn started her campaign in an impressive way but failed to maintain an upper hand over her rival and lost the match in rubber games with a decent margin on the score board.
Augustyn was impressive in the first set when she controlled the pace of rallies from the opening points and dictated her English opponent in all areas.
She was in commanding position in the court and set up a comfortable lead of 11-7 until the one-minute interval in the first set.
After the break, Cann geared up her speed and levelled the score at 13-13 but failed to dominate the pace as her opponent was playing on a different level. She lost the opening game with a six-point deficit of 15-21.
In the second set, Augustyn again dominated the game in the first half and remained successful in taking a reasonable lead on the board by reaching at 11-8.
After the break, Cann showed her brilliance in the game and controlled the pace by taking the bird early from all areas.
Augustyn was ahead at 16-15 when Cann displayed spectacular performance and scored six points in a row to grab the set with a 21-16 score on the board.
In the deciding set, both ladies were close in the first half as no one could establish a strong position.
However, Cann became quicker in the concluding part of deciding game. She controlled the bird at net and moved her Polish rival in all corners of the court. She eventually bagged the final game with a difference of 21-16.
Cann won this thrilling rubber-set contest in 51 minutes with an interesting margin of 15-21, 21-16 and 21-16.
