  1. Elizabeth I spent much time at Windsor Castle and regarded it as the safest place in her realm and would retire here in moments of anxiety, as she described it: "knowing it could stand a siege if need be".

I had thought she would have lived at Buckingham Palace, but Queen Victoria was the first monarch to live there, as it became the official residence for the monarchy in 1837.

I found no further references as to where Queen Elizabeth I lived during her reign.

  2. Queen Elizabeth I spent a great deal of time moving from one residence to another. Most of the time, she resided in one of the great royal palaces including Whitehall, Hampton Court, Greenwich, Richmond, Westminster, St James, Windsor Castle, and towards the end of her reign, Nonsuch.

Her court was wherever the Queen happened to be and was made up of all those who surrounded the Queen from servants to the courtiers themselves.

  3. She was queen of England so I presume she was in the same palace that Elizabeth the 2nd is in.

  4. Elizabeth I was born at Greenwich Palace, spent much of her young life at Hatfield Palace.  She then lived to St. James Palace, but relocated to The Palace of Whitehall upon becoming queen.  She then moved toRichmond Palace where she died.

  5. It was at Hatfield that Elizabeth learned she had become Queen of England upon the death of her sister, Mary I.

Court was wherever the Queen happened to be and was made up of all those who surrounded the Queen from servants to the courtiers themselves. Once a year the Queen would often go on a progress to the southern counties, but most of the time, she resided in one of the great royal palaces; Whitehall, Hampton Court, Greenwich, Richmond, Westminster, St James, Windsor Castle, and towards the end of her reign, Nonsuch.

Whitehall was reputedly the largest palace in Europe, spanning an incredible 23 acres, and it was this palace that Elizabeth resided in more than any other.

At her accession, the Queen inherited over sixty royal residences.

The palaces were, in many ways, an architectural embodiment of the monarch. They were therefore not only magnificent in exterior appearance, but had also magnificent interiors.
