Elizabeth McDonald claims Girls 100 yard freestyle title – High School State Championships
Elizabeth McDonald of Pomperaug claimed the title of Girls 100 yard freestyle at the 2011 High School State Championships in New Haven, Connecticut, on Saturday, November 19.
McDonald outshined her ruthless competitors in the freestyle playoff and ensured her top finish on the podium. With her stunning efforts, she not only claimed the title of the event but she also improved the state record with a fraction of 0.35 seconds.
She was the first swimmer to jump of the starting blocks, while her quickest start played a vital role in placing her ahead of her competitors.
She completed her first round in a fastest time of 24.33 seconds and stayed considerably ahead of her strongest competitor, Lauren Church of Greenwich. Church remained 0.34 seconds away and completed her initial 50 yards in a time of 24.67 seconds.
McDonald continued her persistent efforts in the next round, where she sprinted her way towards the finishing wall by submitting a phenomenal time of 50.39 seconds for gold medal.

The gold medallist remained 1.26 seconds ahead of Church, who hit the wall with a wonderful timing of 51.65 seconds for silver medal. Meanwhile, Church remained 0.27 seconds ahead of her subsequent rival Katy Luchansky of Saint Joseph, who produced a third fastest effort of 51.92 seconds.
The fourth fastest spot was secured by Madeline Smart of Brookfield, who stayed 0.94 seconds away from the bronze medallist and ended her swim in a time of 52.86 seconds.
