Elizabeth Simmonds earns Women’s 100m backstroke gold: Day one – 2012 British GAS ASA Nationals
British backstroke expert, Elizabeth Simmonds of Loughborough University earned gold medal of the Women’s 100m backstroke on opening day of the 2012 British GAS ASA Nationals in Sheffield, England on Wednesday, June 20.
Simmonds, who qualified in the playoff as top contender for gold medal, met expectations of her supporters by snaring the crown of the event. She was the only swimmer to post a sub one minute effort in the discipline and proved her eligibility for first
position.
She stayed one body length ahead of her opponents and tapped the finishing end with the timing of 59.89 seconds for first position.
The gold medallist was followed by Georgia Davies of Swansea Perf, who remained 0.71 seconds apart and tapped the finishing wall with the timing of 1 minute and 00.60 seconds for silver medal.
Third position of the discipline was secured by Lauren Quigley of Co Manchester Aquatics, who was 0.12 seconds behind and reached the podium for bronze medal with an effort of 1 minute and 00.72 seconds.
The bronze medallist was secured by Stephanie Proud of Chester Le S, who stayed one body length away from his former finisher and posted a time of 1 minute and 01.40 seconds.
Fifth position of the discipline was secured by Ekaterina Avramova of Ealing, who stayed 0.80 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and posted a time of 1 minute and 02.20 seconds.
Avramova was trailed by Rachel Lefley of Loughborough University, who was 0.25 seconds slower and submitted a time of 1 minute and 02.45 seconds for sixth position.
Similarly, Lefley remained 0.23 seconds ahead of Jessica Fullalove of Co Manchester Aquatics, who secured seventh position of the event by clocking a time of 1 minute and 02.68 seconds for seventh position.
Eighth position of the discipline was secured by Georgia Hohmann of Nova Centurion, who was almost half a second behind and reported a time of 1 minute and 03.21 seconds.
Furthermore, the arena appreciated commendable forms of all contestants in the 100m discipline while the championship will continue for three more days to conclude all swimming events.
