Elizabeth Simmonds wins Women’s 200m backstroke gold: Day seven – British Gas Swimming Championships
European Champion, Elizabeth Simmonds of Loughborough University won gold medal of the Women’s 200m backstroke on seventh day of the 2012 British Gas Swimming Championships at the London Aquatics Centre on Friday, March 9.
The British meet is of considerable importance as it offers a chance to their local swimmers to come and prove their eligibility in the national team to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 21-year-old Simmonds remained remarkably ahead of her challengers throughout the race and faced no difficulty in claiming the title of four-lap event. With her continued efforts, she enjoyed a lead of almost half body length over her strongest challenger,
Chester Le S’s Stephanie Proud and secured top position on the podium.
The British expert completed her initial lap of the race in a fastest time of 29.77 seconds. With her alluring effort, she remained 1.05 seconds ahead of Proud, who covered the same in a time of 30.82 seconds.
Simmonds continued her supremacy in the second lap, where she extended her lead to 1.32 seconds and ended her initial half of the event with an effort of 1 minute and 01.82 seconds. In contrast, Proud also sustained her second best spot and ended her initial
100 metres with the timing of 1 minute and 03.14 seconds.
With her stupendous efforts, Simmonds strengthened her position for the gold spot in third round, where she clocked a timing of 1 minute and 34.45 seconds. She was trailed by Proud, who remained 1.50 seconds slower from her and enveloped the equivalent distance
with the timing of 1 minute and 35.95 seconds.
The Loughborough’s swimmer demonstrated her notable efforts in the final round, where she hit the wall first with an effort of 2 minutes and 08.67 seconds. She was followed by Proud, who occupied silver medal of the event with a timing of 2 minutes and 09.94
seconds. Hillingdon’s Karley Mann was the third fastest swimmer of the discipline as she reported a time of 2 minutes and 10.57 seconds.
In addition, the session ended after the completion of all listed events whereas the winners received medals at prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
