But do those countries contribute to the royal upkeep? Just curious. I am a monarchist, though it doesn't matter since I'm also an American.

  1. Not directly (at least in Canada). But we maintain a governor-general, who is the Queen's representative to Canada. The GG is appointed by the Queen on the advice of our Prime Minister (head of state) for a term. She has her own official residence, and her work is mostly ceremonial. She fulfills many of the same duties as the Queen - opening Parliament, presenting awards, entertaining visiting diplomats, etc.

Each Canadian province has a Lieutenant-Governor as well, who is the Queen's representative to that particular province. Their duties are the same as the GG, opening the Legislature, etc.

When the Queen visits Canada, her expenses are paid by this country.

  2. Specifically pertaining to the question: no, the countries where the British monarch is also King/Queen do not contribute to the expenses made towards the Castles and other amenities enjoyed by the Queen and the Royal Family in the UK.  Those are funded by only 2 sources of income: the British taxpayer (the Queen is entitled to a type of "salary" for performing the duty of Head of State) and, second, by private sources of income.  The Queen (or the British monarch) is the biggest landlord in the UK: she owns land and apartment buildings whose tenants pay her rent.  The Prince of Wales (Prince Charles, currently) is entitled to a share from taxes levied in the Dukedom of Cornwall, for instance.

But Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica et al. do not contribute to pay for Buckingham Palace, Balmoral Castle, the Royal Train, the Royal Airplane, cars, the staff of all those places, etc.

  3. I live in australia. as far as i know we do not pay anything towards the queen. she isn't really anything but our figurehead. we have our own primeminister, we don't sing 'god save the queen', etc.
