Ellen Allgurin upsets Indy De Vroome in Girls’ Singles 1st round – US Open 2011
Swede Ellen Allgurin clashed against ninth seeded Indy De Vroome during the main draw of the US Open 2011 girls’ tournament. The two battled it out on hard court 6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Despite being
a strong player throughout 2011, Vroome lost the match to the un-seeded Allgurin, in straight sets of 6-7(6), 6-2.
Meeting for the first time, the two were unfamiliar with each other’s style and technique. Opening the first set was Vroome. Both the players won on their serve but in the third game Vroome was first to break but Allgurin was able
to break back to equalize the core at 2-2. In the following four games both won on alternate serves but in the ninth and tenth again the two broke back to even the score at 5-5. Vroome then went on to winning on her serve and hoped that Allgurin would not
hold her serve but that was just wishful thinking. In the twelfth game Allgurin pushed the set into a tie breaker. During the toe break again the players were neck in neck with their points but then Allgurin took a notch higher and won in 2 consecutive games
and left her opponent standing at 6 points.
The first set was a marathon run between the two but eventually Allgurin hung in to win the first set by smashing 2 aces and 2 winners. The second set was a much easier victory for Allgurin as she kept the pace and hit strong forehands
and backhand shots.
Opening the second set was Allgurin, the pair kept on winning on their alternate serves in the first five games and then in the sixth game Allgurin was first to break and took the lead at 4-2. She was then able to secure her lead
in the seventh and finally broke her opponent for the second time to secure a speedy 6-2 victory.
Although, neither player smashed an ace or a winner, Allgurin was still capable of winning the second set. By capitalizing on 2 out of 3 break point chances and with almost twice as many points as her opponent, she secured a place
in the second round of the US Open 2011.
The first upset of the US Open Junior tournament was at the hands of Allgurin, who will now be facing American Kimberly Yee in the second round.
