Ellen Gandy and Jemma Lowe will compete Francesca Halsall at 2012 British Gas Swimming Championships
Ellen Gandy and Jemma Lowe are all set to compete with the British record holder, Francesca Halsall in the 100m butterfly at the 2012 British Gas Swimming Championships. These championships will take place at the Aquatics Centre in London from March 3 to 10.
With just 31 days left in the national event, which will also serve as a selection trial for the 2012 London Olympic Games, British swimmers have started to register themselves in their respective events.
Halsall is the national record holder of 50m butterfly and a silver medallist in the 100m discipline at the 2011 British Gas Nationals. She also won gold medals of 50m and 100m freestyle at the same championship, last year.
On the other side, Gandy captured gold medals of 100m and 200m butterfly while Lowe finished third and second in the same events at the 2011 British Championships.
With the participation of British triumvirate in the same event, the 100m butterfly is considered to be one of the toughest events of the tournament. Lowe, Halsall and Gandy all are ranked in the top eight swimmers of the 100m butterfly at the 2011 FINA World standings.
Subsequently, Halsall will also defend her titles of the freestyle discipline at these championships while Lowe and Gandy will battle each other in the 200m butterfly.
Other than that, Liam Tancock, who remains undefeated in the national 100m backstroke from the last three years, has also showed interest in defending his title at the upcoming nationals.
Furthermore, the six-time Paralympics champion, Sascha Kindred is also taking part in the event and will try to prove his mettle in the 200m Individual Medley, 100m Freestyle, 50m Butterfly and 100m Breaststroke.
The British championships will continue for eight days and conclude on March 10 after the completion of all events in Men and Women’s category. The morning session will include the preliminary rounds of all events whereas semi-finals and finals are scheduled in the evening session.
With the upcoming London Olympics, these championships are of considerable importance as these provide a chance to all British players to confirm their spots for the mega event.
