Ellen Gandy dominates 200m butterfly event at the 2011 British Gas Swimming Championships:
Day four
Day four of the 2011 British Gas Swimming ended with the amazing performances of Ellen Gandy, Michael Rock, Tom Allen, Russell Smith, Liam Tancock, Georgia Davies and James Goddard in their respective events. The championship is being conducted at the Manchester
Aquatics Centre and will conclude on March 12, 2011.
Ellen Gandy, the winner of the 100m butterfly event at this championship, dominated the 200m butterfly heat to qualify for the semi-finals with her sterling performance of 2:07.76 minutes, against Jemma Lowe’s 2:08.82 minutes effort. Gandy’s performance
until the first 100m was going to crash the European Championship record by Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu.
In the Women’s 50m back-stroke event, Georgia Davies qualified for the semi-finals as the fastest swimmer in a time of 28.77 seconds. She was followed by 16-year-old Emma Saunders and Rachel Lefley, in 28.89 and 29.34 seconds, respectively.
On the Men’s side, teenager Tom Allen recorded his victory comfortably in the 800m freestyle category in a time of 8:00.25 minutes. He was followed by Thomas Sunter, who secured the second place in 8:09.63 minutes. His team-member, Daniel Cocking, ended
his race in the third spot in 8:14.70 minutes. The event is not considered as a selection for Britain’s team that will participate at 2011 Shanghai World Championships, in July.
The 18-year-old Allen, while expressing his desire for a better performance said, "I thought the time could have been faster. I was trying to do a negative split but I didn't have it in me today."
Michael Rock took the title for the 200m butterfly in 1:56.31 minutes, ahead of second finisher, Joe Roebuck, who touched home in 1:56.67 minutes. They were followed by Roberto Pavoni in the third place in a time of 1:58.03 minutes.
In the Men’s 50m breast-stroke final, another teenager, Douglas Scott, touched the wall in 28.74 seconds to claim his gold medal. He was followed by Russell Smith and Craig Elliot, who ended their races in 28.81 and 28.91 seconds, respectively.
The Men’s 100m freestyle semi-finals were full of surprises. In the first semi-final, backstroke champion, Liam Tancock, secured the first spot in 50.06 seconds. Then in the second semi-final, Simon Burnett encountered a very close fight with Adam Brown,
touching the wall in 49.72 seconds against Brown’s 49.95 seconds effort.
