Ellen Gandy earns Women’s 100m butterfly gold: Day two – 2012 NSW State Open Championships
World silver medallist and Great Britain’s veteran, Ellen Gandy lived up to the expectations of her fans by earning gold medal of the Women’s 100m butterfly on second day of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) State Open Championships at the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre on Saturday, February 11.
The 20-year-old Gandy served notice of her talent by overpowering Australian expert, Yolane Kukla in the double lap event. With her immaculate efforts, she stayed considerably away from Kukla and reached the podium for gold medal.
With her quickest dive, the British champion gained slight lead over her fellow swimmers in the start of the race. She continued her thrilling efforts and shattered hopes of her competitors by completing her initial lap of the race in a wonderful time of 26.93 seconds.
She was trailed by 16-year-old Kukla, who remained just 0.13 seconds away from Gandy and ended her first half of the race by posting an effort of 27.06 seconds. The 25-year-old Alice Tait remained prominent for the third fastest spot, as she concluded her first half in a time of 27.46 seconds.
Gandy continued her smothering efforts in the next half, where she boosted her pace and made her way to the finishing wall in a time of 30.85 seconds to post 57.78 seconds for the crown of the event.
The gold medallist was trailed by Kukla, who failed to make a significant change in her pace and ended her second lap with a timing of 31.48 seconds to submit 58.54 seconds for silver medal. The second position holder was chased by Tait, who sustained her position in the final lap and seized bronze medal of the event by producing a time of 59.08 seconds.
Gandy was delighted with her title claiming effort on second day of the championship and expressed her desire of achieving the same at the upcoming Olympic Games. In addition, the session concluded after the completion of all scheduled events whereas the winners were awarded accolades at medal ceremony of the championship.
Furthermore, the meet will conclude on February 12, after the conclusion of all scheduled events.
