Ellen Gandy pockets Women’s 100m butterfly gold: Day two – British Gas Swimming Nationals
Ellen Gandy of Beckenham pocketed gold medal of the Women’s 100m butterfly on second day of the 2012 British Gas Swimming Nationals at the London Aquatics Centre on Sunday, March 4.
The British Gas Championships are acting as a Selection Trials for the forthcoming Olympic Games, where the gold medallists will confirm their spots in the British team to Olympics.
The 20-year-old Gandy went full throttle in the two-lap butterfly event. With her immaculate efforts, she remained prominently ahead of her challengers throughout the discipline and posted 57.25 seconds for gold medal.
Her nerve-wrecking form placed her nearly one stroke ahead of her strongest competitor, Francesca Halsall of Loughborough University, who earned second position of the discipline and tapped the finishing wall with the timing of 57.56 seconds.
The 21-year-old Halsall stayed 0.50 seconds ahead of her following swimmer, Jemma Lowe of Swansea Perf, who secured the podium for bronze medal by producing an effort of 58.06 seconds.
In the meantime, Robert Renwick of Co Glasgow occupied top qualification spot in the final round of Men’s 200m freestyle as he ended first in the semi-final with an effort of 1 minute and 47.25 seconds.
Renwick was trailed by Ieuan Lloyd of Co Cardiff, who earned second best position of the swim in 1 minute and 47.84 seconds. Lloyd was chased by Robert Bale of Carnforth, who submitted an effort of 1 minute and 48.39 seconds for third position.
Next was the Women’s 100m breaststroke semi-final, where Sophie Allen of Stockport Mo ended first by clocking a time of 1 minute and 08.44 seconds. She was followed by Kate Haywood of Loughborough University, who was just 0.02 seconds slower and posted 1
minute and 08.46 seconds for second position.
Haywood remained nearly one second ahead of Edinburgh University’s Kerry Buchan, who reported 1 minute and 09.16 seconds to enter the final round.
The session ended after the completion of all planned events, while the winners received accolades for their irresistible efforts after the session. Furthermore, the championship will conclude on March 10 after the conclusion of all swims in Men and Women’s
corner.
