Ellen Gandy pockets Women’s 200m butterfly gold: Day five – British Gas Swimming Championships
Ellen Gandy of Beckenham pocketed gold medal of the Women’s 200m butterfly final on fifth day of the continued 2012 British Gas Swimming Championships at the London Aquatics Centre on Wednesday, March 7.
The British Championship is the Olympic selection trials for their national swimmers and is aimed to complete the Great Britain’s squad for the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 20-year-old Gandy experienced no trouble in confirming her place in the British team for the upcoming Olympics as she stayed prominently ahead of her rivals throughout the swim. With her immaculate effort, she was the first swimmer to leap into the water.
Gandy cruised her way to the other end of the pool in a fastest time of 27.46 seconds. She remained 0.98 seconds ahead of her closest competitor, Jemma Lowe of Swansea Perf, who completed her initial 50 metres of the swim by clocking 28.44 seconds.
The butterfly specialist, Gandy continued her thrilling form in the second lap, where she extended her lead to almost two seconds over Lowe and ended her initial half of the race in a time of 58.31 seconds. Subsequently, Lowe wrapped up the equivalent distance in a time of 1 minute and 00.07 seconds.
With her persistent efforts, Gandy sustained her position in the third lap, where she enjoyed an advantage of almost 1.50 seconds over her closest swimmer and posted 1 minute and 30.94 seconds on the bulletin board. Her effort remained almost a body length ahead of Lowe, who enveloped the same distance by posting a time of 1 minute and 32.45 seconds.
The 21-year-old Lowe accelerated her struggle in the final lap but failed to overpower Gandy on the finishing end for gold medal. Gandy won gold medal of the event by producing an effort of 2 minutes and 06.01 seconds.
Subsequently, Lowe remained 0.36 seconds away and clocked 2 minutes and 06.37 seconds for silver medal. The third position was obtained by Jessica Dickons of Edinburgh University, who reported 2 minutes and 09.21 seconds for bronze medal.
In addition, the session completed after the conclusion of all listed events.
