Ellen Gandy seizes Women’s 200m butterfly gold: Day three – 2012 NSW State Open Championships
British expert, Ellen Gandy demonstrated her smothering efforts and seized gold medal of the Women’s 200m butterfly on final day of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) State Open Championships at the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre on Sunday, February 12.
The 20-year-old Gandy, who qualified into the playoff as top contender for gold medal, made no mistake in the final round and occupied top spot of the race on medal rostrum. She faced no trouble from her closest competitor, Samantha Hamill and remained prominently
away from her over the finishing end.
With her flawless efforts, Gandy overpowered efforts of her fellow swimmers in the first lap, as she completed her lap in a time of 27.76 seconds. She remained nearly two seconds ahead of Hamill, who emerged on the other end as second fastest swimmer and
clocked a time of 29.65 seconds.
Great Britain’s Gandy continued her relentless efforts in the second lap and ended her first round of the race in a time of 59.13 seconds. With her nerve-wrecking pace, Gandy extended her lead to 3.20 seconds as the 20-year-old Hamill concluded her first
round with the timing of 1 minute and 02.33 seconds.
The same continued in the third lap, where British champion displayed her fascinating speed and extended her lead to about 4.50 seconds by producing a time of 1 minute and 31.76 seconds. Her scintillating effort placed her nearly two-body lengths away from
her immediate swimmer, Hamill, who covered initial 150 metres of the race in a time of 1 minute and 36.32 seconds.
Gandy showed her urgency towards the finishing wall in the last lap, where she reported a time of 2 minutes and 05.95 seconds for gold medal. She remained 5.04 seconds ahead of Hamill, who followed her on the podium for silver medal by posting a time of
2 minutes and 10.99 seconds.
In the meantime, Amy Smith appeared on the finishing end for third position and hit the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 11.06 seconds.
Furthermore, the winners received their awards at the medal ceremony after the completion of session.
