Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Ellen Gandy, has won the Women’s 200m butterfly final, on the fifth day of 2011 British Gas Swimming Championships, held at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.
The championship is being conducted to select the Britain Swimming Team which will contest at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, in July.
Gandy has already booked her spot in Britain’s team with her victory in the 100m butterfly category. Despite of her exhaustive swimming schedule at the championship, she still decided to compete in the 200m butterfly event. She conquered the event in a time
of 2:06.13 minutes, followed by Jemma Lowe and Jessica Dickons in 2:06.94 minutes and 2:10.96 minutes, respectively.
Australian-based Gandy said, “I was tired today but I’m glad I could get a time that fast. I’m going straight back to Australia and then I’ll have a break in April after the Australian trials.”
In the Men’s competitions, Adam Brown was the most dominating freestyle swimmer, as he made his way through to the 100m freestyle finals.
Two-time Commonwealth Games champion, James Goddard, won the gold medal in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley.
Goddard said, “The race was hurting and I could feel the others coming up on me but I gritted my teeth. I’m a racer and I wanted to win.”
Roebuck finished in a time of 1:58.28 minutes and was followed by Ieuan Lloyd at 2:01.68 minutes.
Commonwealth bronze medallist, Georgia Davies, won the gold medal in the 50m breast-stroke, in a time of 28.67 seconds. She was followed by Emma Saunders and Lauren Quigley in 28.80 seconds and 29.38 seconds, respectively.
The winner of the 200m IM, James Goddard, then went on to secure his spot in the final of the event. He successfully secured the first position in a time of 2:00.46 minutes, in the 200m backstroke semi-finals. Goddard has already booked his spot for the
2011 World Championships with his win in the 200m IM and now, with an expected win in the 200m backstroke, he might be representing Britain in this category also.
