Ellen Gandy wins silver medal in Women’s 200m butterfly: Day five – 2011 FINA World Championships
Great Britain’s Ellen Gandy produced a scintillating splash on day five of the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China, on Thursday, July 28. The session of the meet conducted the Women’s 200m Butterfly final, where Gandy grabbed the silver crown
with an impressive time of 2 minutes and 05.59 seconds.
While speaking about her performance in the respective meet, Gandy said, “I was solely focused on my own swim. I didn't know where she (Jiao) was and I was just gunning it to the wall. It's an incredible feeling. I really didn't think I would be here at
the start of the day. I'm so happy - it's just an amazing feeling to have a World Championship medal. It's been a really tough week but really good racing and preparation for next year.”
Earlier, Gandy won the silver medal in the Women’s 4x200m freestyle meet at the 2008 European Championships, in Eindhoven. She grabbed the bronze medal in the 200m butterfly splash at the 2010 editions of the European Championships, in Budapest.
Moreover, Ellen won two silver medals in the 100m butterfly and 4x100m medley events at the 2010 edition of the Commonwealth Games, in Delhi. She also grabbed one bronze title in the 200m butterfly race in the same competition.
Despite the fact that she has never won the golden crown at the Olympic Games, she looks confident to live up to expectations of British Swimming at the upcoming Olympics, in London, 2012.
In the meantime, Ryan Lochte of the United States beat the 14-time Olympic champion, Michael Fred Phelps, in the vital splash of the Men’s 200m Individual Medley. Lochte posted the textile record with a time of 1 minute and 54.00 seconds, while Phelps earned
the silver medal with an impressive time of 1 minute and 54.16 seconds. Laszlo Cseh of Hungary clinched the bronze title with a time of 1 minute and 57.69 seconds.
On the other hand, Australian James Magnussen won the Men’s 100m Freestyle title with a record time of 47.63 seconds.
