Ellie Cole outshines in Girls 100m back-stroke meet: Day three – Australian Age MC Championships
Ellie Cole of VIC TigerSharks outshined her competitors in the Girls 100m back-stroke in 19 years and over category on third day of the 2011 Australian Age Multi Class (MC) Championships. The session concluded on Sunday, October 9, at the Australian Institute
of Sport (AIS) in Canberra.
Cole, who has the disability class S9, dominated the final of the event to prove his mettle for the gold medal. The 19-year-old Cole remained more than a half minute ahead of her closest competitor and secured gold spot on the podium in a comfortable manner.
With her powerful start and strong strokes, she was way ahead of her competitors. Her magnificent swim in the first lap restrained her swimmers from getting nearer to her and she earned a prominent lead over her rivals. She completed her initial lap of the
race in a time of 34.38 seconds, whereas, her strongest challenger, Rachel Horler of NSW Mingara stayed 17.98 seconds away and clocked a time of 52.36 seconds.
In the next lap of the race, Cole presented a wonderful effort, completing her lap in a time of 35.69 seconds to submit 1 minute and 10.07 seconds on the board. With her splendid effort, she remained almost one second slower from producing a negative split,
but she easily claimed the gold medal.
On the other hand, Horler completed her second lap with a timing of 54.77 seconds to post 1 minute and 47.13 seconds for silver medal. Horler was almost forty seven seconds ahead of his following competitor, Diane Wells of QLD Grace, who reached the podium
for third position. The 51-year-old Wells, who has the disability class of S6, touched the wall to report a time of 2 minutes and 34.28 seconds to pocket bronze medal of the event.
The arena appreciated the gruelling efforts of all multi-class swimmers who raced each other to secure podium finishes in the dual lap back-stroke event. In addition, the winners collected awards and accolades for their phenomenal efforts after the completion
of the session.
