Severe injuries have been the Achilles heel for Portland Trail Blazers guard Elliot Williams throughout his short career and the 23 year old is now in danger of being red flagged by NBA...
When Elliot Williams was drafted as the 22nd pick back in 2010 by the Portland Trail Blazers, the young shooting guard would have hoped to develop himself as one of the better players around the league.
However, Williams’ three year career has so far been a nightmare as severe injuries had held him back so far. And things got even worse for him on Friday after Williams went through a surgery, which has put an end to his 2012-13
season.
Williams underwent surgery on his left Achilles tendon which he suffered on Tuesday while going through workouts at the Blazers training facility. The procedure has been successful and he is set to recover fully. However the recovery
time will make him miss the whole of next season. This will be the second time in his short career that Williams will be missing out a whole season as surgery on both knees made him sit out for whole of his rookie campaign. He was also unable to participate
fully last season because of a shoulder surgery.
This is also a huge setback for Portland who seem to draft only those player who suffer career threatening injuries - Brandon Roy and Greg Oden being the classic examples in that regard. Williams made only 24 appearances in a Blazers
jersey in the last three years and his career averages of 3.7 points and 0.8 rebounds are not that very impressive. Nevertheless he was a role player and the Blazers could have done with a bit of depth in the back court.
The Blazers are now left with limited options in the back court with Will Barton and Nolan Smith likely to back up Wesley Mathews. The team also has the option of using Nicholas Batum at the two guard position.
The Trail Blazers are desperately trying to push themselves back into prominence this season, and to do so they are relying heavily on LaMarcus Aldridge. The power forward has the ability to do that, but needs a fit and healthy
roster around him.
