The equation

(x^2 /16) + (y^2 /9) =1

is an ellipse with center at the origin. Find the area of the square that can be inscribed (or fitted) in this ellipse.

LOL a very difficult question

  1. not really difficult.  "fit" means the corners of the square sit on the ellipse, and since both figures are symmetric with respect to both x and y axes, just replace y with x and solve.

    x²/16 + x²/9 = 1

    9x² + 16x² = 144

    25x² = 144

    x = ±12/5

    so width (and height) are 24/5 and area is 576/25 = 23.04
