Elliptical vs. running?

I'm conditioning to play softball in college. I recently got an elliptical, and was curious as to if I would get the same conditioning effects by using the elliptical instead of running. I get quite the workout on it, and i'm always tired after i use it, but I'm just not sure if it does the same as running.

  1. It works out more of your body, so it might be good, but not what all of the muscle groups that you are looking for if you just run. I think that because of your arms, you gain support. Therefore less of a workout. (than standing and running, nothing to hold on to)
