Ellis Short, the Sunderland owner, has claimed he will only sign players who can be expected to improve the team in the upcoming season.
The American businessman confirmed that the new manager Martin O’Neill would not be signing players just because they were available. Short revealed he had been in talks with O’Neill and they had decided only to bring in signings that could benefit the club.
Along with the manager, Short was certain the supporters understood his forward planning. He revealed the Irish manager was currently looking at possible new signings, the ones he thought could be good for the club in the short and long run.
The English Premier League club owner said that the club would no longer sign players just because they were available, or were considered inexpensive. He said they wanted to bring in quality and under Martin O’Neill, they were on the road to do so.
Short said in an interview:
“The fans have a pretty good idea of what we need to do and everybody has a pretty good idea of what we need to do, so now Martin is looking at specific players that we might want, and then there will be a lot of work and then trying to get those players
here.
But we don't want to sign players just for the sake of signing them, or because it feels like they are inexpensive for some reason.
We want to identify players who are good and who will definitely improve us, and try to bring them in.”
Martin O’Neill replaced Steve Bruce as the manager at the Stadium of Light last season after the latter was sacked mid-season. While Bruce made over ten signings in the summer transfer window prior to the 2011-2012 season, those players did not quite make
the impact he had hoped for.
It is for this reason that Short does not want to make unnecessary signings this time around. The American tycoon admitted there was pressure to do better in the Premier League with every passing season. He revealed:
“There is a lot of pressure, not just to stay in the Premier League, but to improve.”
