Ellis believes that England will close in the gap - Rugby League
Gareth Ellis spoke with reporters on Thursday, October 27, and mentioned the improving stature of England's preparations ahead of the Gillette Four Nations. He acknowledged the major leap towards narrowing the gap between Australia and New Zealand, who will
soon take each other on for the Four Nations’ title.
Ellis has been playing for the English side for last seven years and believes that England has surpassed their previous benchmark to be on the level which is far ahead than otherwise expected.
Being part of the training period himself, the second-rower reckons England preparations for the Four Nations as "a step up from anything he had ever experienced before in terms of professionalism.”
He further went on and added, “We are ranked third in the league but I'm not sure the teams above us will be doing as much as we are. I think if England stick at it for long enough that gap will get smaller and in the long run we will catch them up.”
England will gauge their preparations during their clash against the Wales at Leigh on Saturday and Ellis reckoned that the major step for them will be to hold back Lee Briers, the Wales’ skipper to snatch away the game from England’s quarters.
Wales on the other hand is topping the tables ahead of the start of the Four Nations. While referring to their opponents in the very first clash of the campaign, Ellis said, “I'll be honest and say I don't really know a lot about Wales. A few of the boys
have played against some of their players but I've not played against many at all, apart from obviously the key man, Lee Briers.”
While speaking about Briers’ unmatched talent which speaks a great deal about his true potential, the prop added that Wales’ captain will put the English side through a very tough drill.
He further went on and added that the Welsh side will test waters of the English side and basically this game will indicate them their true strength.
Amidst the on-going discussion about the superior Welsh side, Ellis also broke the news about his return to his home soil, England.
