Elna Supermatic Needle wont move up

Question

I have recently tried to use the Elna Supermatic. It is a fairly old sewing machine. I was sewing a normal straight stitch and decided to turn the foot pedal to fast rather than slow. I stopped and did this. When i started to sew again the needle went down but would not come back up. I wound the k**b the wrong way to get the needle up. The needle will not move when the k**b on the side is turned the right way. Any ideas?
