I have an Eltax Spirit DVD and Home cinema thingy had it for about 5 years maybe longer. Now all of a sudden it won't play dvd's. Music CD's play fine and the tv and radio both work fine through it. When you put a dvd into it it takes around 5mins to read and then stops and says no disc. I've not played any dvd-r in it just authentic dvd's. Any ideas?

  1. You have managed 5 years use from an Eltax product.

That's 4 years longer than their life expectancy.

'Tis about time for a replacement (and an award from Eltax, I would have thought!).

  2. From what I have read it is a cheap piece of c**p electronic product. Be glad you got 5 years out of it.

I spent $500 US dollars on my latest Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player. YIKES!

I wouldn't really call that package a "home theater" either. :D check out www.avsforum.com for some real "home theaters."

  3. I've read that DVD players, particulalry inexpensive ones, have a limited life expectancy (The laser wears out). Five years is about average, but it depends on use.

It could be (I'm guessing) that since DVDs are "fussier" (more precise alignment of the laser beam is required) it will still play CDs, but is not able to sync with DVDs. Maybe someone else can confirm, but I'd guess the laser is weak or misaligned.

Anyway, I strongly suspect you are facing having to replace the player since fixing it won't be cost effective. After all new DVD players sell for about $30.

    Sorry.
