Elwick Chris outdoes Bucks Yahoo in Stanjames.com Laurels final
The £6000 Stanjames.com Laurels Final was run at Belle Vue Tuesday and it was Elwick Chris who came out as top dog.
Bucks Yahoo came into the Laurels as the favourite to win it all, but a collision in his first race almost took him out of contention in the early stages. He did well to recover from the impact, finishing
in third place, and qualifying for the semi-final.
With no interference in the semi-final, Bucks cruised to victory, and came into the final as the 5-2 race favourite. However, a missed break was all it took to take him out of contention in the final race.
Bucks finished in fourth place with a time of 29.02 seconds.
With Bucks trailing in the early stages, Yahoo Jamie, who had lost to Bucks in the Laurels already, found himself in front, but Jamie hadn’t raced against Elwick Chris yet. Chris had won both of his races
leading up to the final, and with Bucks behind early, he had no intention of letting anyone else challenge for first place. Chris won the race, and the £6000 prize, by 2¾ lengths with a time of 27.50 seconds.
Jamie may have thought he was going to at least take second place in this race, but 8-1 longshot, November Weather, had other ideas.
Weather was impressive in the first round, he came in as a 12-1 longshot, and finished in third place behind two of Charlie Lister’s hounds, Jordan Light and Yahoo Jamie. It was a good enough finish to
earn him a spot in the semi-finals. He did get some help in the first round when two strong contenders, Mill Pinpoint and Jordansoilutions, collided, fell, and were eliminated from the Laurels.
Few expected Weather to make an impact in the semi-final, he was only there because of the fall in the first round right? Again Weather did what few expected, this time he almost won the race outright,
taking second place, just a head behind Magna Buddy.
For the third straight race Weather defied the odds, and finished well ahead of where he was expected to finish. Weather took second place in his semi-final, this time ¾ lengths ahead of third place finisher,
Jamie.
Magna Buddy, like Yahoo, missed his break, and couldn’t get in front of anybody as he finished in last place. Taking fifth was another longshot, Hello Dino.
With the win, Elwick Chris will move on to the WilliamHill.com All England Cup at Newcastle. The Cup begins on 30 October.
